North Carolina rapper Rapsody has a long history with Kendrick Lamar, first teaming up with him on 2011’s “Rock the Bells” and later appearing on “Complexion (A Zulu Love)” from Kendrick’s 2015 album To Pimp A Butterfly. Today, the pair reunited for “Power,” a song from Rapsody’s new album Laila’s Wisdom. The track also features Kendrick’s fellow TDE rapper Lance Skiiiwalker and is produced by 9th Wonder.
Rapsody explained to Genius that “Power” was part of a batch of songs she sent over to Kendrick while he was working on his recent album DAMN.:
It was just like, ‘Man, I hear Kendrick on it.’ I sent him a batch of four or five records and ‘Power’ was one of them. He added his own twist and it’s crazy, like he was working on his DAMN. album at the time, I knew he was working on something but I didn’t know anything about it, of course.
But when the DAMN. track listing came out and every song is a one-word title and I thought about, ‘Oh, he’s on 'Power’ and ‘Power’ looks like title-wise it could fit in DAMN.,‘ so I just thought that was really dope.
She also broke down her OutKast reference on the first verse in an annotation:
Laila’s Wisdom also features Anderson .Paak, Terrace Martin, BJ The Chicago Kid, Black Thought, and more.
