twenty one pilots return today with Trench, their first studio album in three years. The duo’s fifth full-length project spans 14 tracks and features the previously-released singles “Jumpsuit,” “Nico and the Niners,” “Levitate,” and “My Blood.” Production is handled by the band’s lead vocalist Tyler Joseph with assistance from MUTEMATH lead singer Paul Meany.
Trench tells the story of a character named Clancy, who must escape the walled city of Dema. He joins with the banditos rebels, who are freeing people from the grip of Dema’s rulers. The mythology was first teased back in July through the mysterious Dema website linked to the band.
In an interview with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, Joseph explained his affinity for concept albums. “I love being able to dive into a story and write from that perspective,” he said. “I wanted to create a world that I could go into and write from. In that world, I could control the exterior and what was kind of pushing down on me. That control was very helpful in the creative process.”
