Five years after releasing their 2018 self-titled debut EP, indie supergroup boygenius—comprising Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus—have returned with their debut studio album, the record. Leading up to the release of the LP, the trio shared four singles: “$20,” “True Blue,” “Emily I’m Sorry,” and “Not Strong Enough.” All four tracks climbed into the upper reaches of the Genius Top Songs chart upon release.
the record began with a song that Bridgers uploaded to a shared Google Drive. Dacus and Baker liked it so much they kept exchanging ideas, eventually deciding to get the band back together. They later met up at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La Studios in Malibu to record the project. Writing as a group was so effortless for the trio, Bridgers is afraid to dissect what makes them work so well together.
“I have this certain reticence at looking under the hood of this band,” she told The Guardian. “I know what I love about [them] both as solo artists, but I think it changes in the band, and it’s just alchemy. There’s a secret fourth thing happening so it’s hard to articulate.”
In support of their new album, boygenius will embark on a North American tour that sets off in April at Fox Theater in Pomona, CA. Along the way, they’ll be joined by Carly Rae Jepsen, Bartees Strange, Claud, Broken Social Scene, and Illuminati Hotties.
