Demi Lovato returns to day with Holy Fvck, her eighth studio album and the follow-up to 2021’s Dancing With The Devil… The Art of Starting Over. The album is a bit of a pivot for the singer, whose sound had veered toward radio-friendly pop for most of the last decade. Holy Fvck sees the former Disney Channel star return to the rock roots of her 2008 debut, Don’t Forget.
Lovato credits her close relationship with the band Dead Sara, who guest on the track “HELP ME,” with inspiring her return to the genre. “They released an album last year, and it reignited this flame inside of me,” Lovato told Vogue. “I was like, ‘I want to do rock music.’” Elsewhere on the LP, Lovato links with indie pop singer-songwriter Royal & the Serpent (“EAT ME”) and U.K. rocker Yungblud (“FREAK”).
Lyrically, Holy Fvck covers everything from Demi’s past relationships and sexuality to her recovery from drug addiction and gender fluidity. She considers the LP her most authentic project to date. “What I learned about myself making this record is that it’s okay to own your truth,” she told Vogue. “The last album that I made, I’m proud of it, but I don’t feel like there was a lot of myself in it.”
