Last month, Drake and 21 Savage surprised fans with news of a forthcoming joint album called Her Loss. It was supposed to drop last Friday, but Drake’s longtime producer Noah “40” Shebib caught COVID-19 during the mixing and mastering process. So the LP was pushed back a full week, to today. The 16-track project comes on the heels of Drake’s recent album Honestly, Nevermind, a timely shift toward house and Baltimore club that arrived in June.
While this is the first time Drake and 21 Savage have teamed up for an entire full-length, the pair have a long history of working together. They’ve previously released four tracks, beginning with the 2016 Drake single “Sneakin’.” In 2020, Drizzy guested on “Mr. Right Now,” off SAVAGE MODE II, a collaborative album by 21 Savage and producer Metro Boomin. Next came “Knife Talk,” a track on Drake’s 2021 Certified Lover Boy LP that also features Project Pat. Most recently, the pair hooked up for “Jimmy Cooks,” the closing track on Drake’s Honestly, Nevermind.
Her Loss contains only one feature, as Travis Scott guests on “Pussy & Millions.” In the lead-up to the album’s release, Drake and 21 Savage cleverly promoted the project with a Vogue cover, an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, and a Howard Stern interview—none of which were actually real.
