Rocketman, the Elton John biopic starring British actor Taron Egerton, debuted in US theaters today. The film is titled after John’s 1972 hit song of the same name, and follows the musician’s early career up to his musical partnership with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin. Other cast members include Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard
The official soundtrack features several of John’s biggest hits performed by Egerton with some assistance from the film’s cast. John makes a sole appearance alongside Egerton on the newly-written song, “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again.”
“It was so important that the music I composed and recorded had to be sung by Taron,” Elton John told uDiscoverMusic. “I wanted his interpretation of me, through Bernie [Taupin]’s lyrics and my music—not just acting. I left Taron in the hands of Giles Martin, who I trusted implicitly because he’s brilliant. I didn’t want to be in Taron’s shadows, watching over the process, I trusted them to do what they needed to do, artistically, and listening back I’ve been astonished with the results.”
