Atlanta rapper Gunna returns with his debut studio album, Drip or Drown 2, a sequel to his 2017 EP, Drip or Drown. The 16-song project features Lil Baby, Young Thug, and Playboi Carti, and is entirely produced by Wheezy and Turbo.
Gunna had a successful 2018 with the release of Drip Season 3 and his joint album with Lil Baby, Drip Harder. The two rappers were even crowned the new “goats” of trap music by Future.
Drip or Drown 2 includes the promotional singles “Speed It Up” and “One Call,” a track that drew attention for its references to 2Pac and Martin Lawrence. The underwater themed, Spike Jordan-directed music video, which has gained over one million Youtube views since its release in February, doubled as a great time to shoot the album’s cover art, which draws inspiration from Nirvana’s 1991 album Nevermind:
Drip or Drown 2 is executive produced by Wheezy, Turbo, and YSL Records label boss Young Thug. In an interview with DJ Drama on Shade 45 a week prior to the album’s release, Gunna explained the importance of giving producers their credit:
Growth, we help each other. They help me, they give me beats. I help them, I make sure they get their name. I don’t want people to not forget how I made this song. You didn’t come up with this song without this beat. It take two to make a song, you can’t do it by yourself. A lot of don’t go back and put the light on the producer.
