Kim Petras returns today with Feed the Beast, her first official studio album in a career that’s included a pair of mixtapes, a handful of EPs, and numerous singles. The project arrives nearly a year after Petras vented on Twitter about how she didn’t have approval to release her album, then rumored to be titled Problématique.
Feed the Beast features several previously released singles, among them the chart-conquering Sam Smith collaboration “Unholy,” which made Petras the first-ever openly trans artist to top the Billboard Hot 100. The LP also includes “Alone,” featuring Nicki Minaj, which dropped in April, and “brrr,” which landed back in January. Also, “Coconuts,” which dates back to December 2021.
In a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, Petras talked about how she co-wrote every song on the album. “I play with this image of being a brat who gets everything handed to her, but it’s not like I go in the studio and someone cooks me a song,” she said. “I went in with Max Martin, and Max Martin will help you and give you his opinion. But you’re still throwing shit out to come up with something together.”
