Today, Mumford & Sons released their fourth studio album, Delta. The 14-track project follows the English folk band’s 2015 full-length, Wilder Mind, and draws on the quartet’s collective experiences on and off the road over the past few years. Production is handled by Paul Epworth, who known for working with Paul McCartney, Adele, and Florence + The Machine. In a Rolling Stone interview, Mumford & Sons estimated that around 100 people passed through their recording sessions at Epworth’s The Church Studios in London.
Mumford & Sons explained on Genius that the lead single, “Guiding Light,” was a year in the making. “That was one that we kept banging our heads against the wall with,” the band noted. “We finally felt like we got there one night when the banjo and the drums fit together for the first time. That was a cool moment in the record making process.”
The band added that the song marked a transition to the more experimental sound of Delta. “We chose ‘Guiding Light’ as the first single because it felt like a good bridge between the old stuff and the new stuff,” Mumford & Sons wrote on Genius. “It’s recognizably us, but it’s not the same as what we’ve done before and lyrically it felt like the moment to be telling that specific story.”
