On the record, Robyn takes her sound in a more club-centric direction.

After an eight-year hiatus, Robyn is back with Honey, her eighth studio album. The LP was preceded by “Missing U,” while its title track served as the second single.

In an interview with The New York Times, Robyn talked about taking the album, and specifically “Honey,” in more of a club direction, as well as how that genre differs from more traditional pop music.

“When you’re listening to club music, there’s no reward,” she said. “The reward isn’t, ‘Oh, here’s the chorus, here’s the lyric that makes sense.’ You have to enjoy what it is. You have to enjoy that there’s no conclusion.”

“Missing U” deals with the passing of Robin’s friend and collaborator Christian Falk and her separation from Max Vitali. In that same New York Times piece, she talked about struggling in 2014 and 2015 following Falk’s death, which is around the time she began working on this album.

Honey features a sole guest appearance from singer Zhala, who is signed to Robyn’s Konichiwa Records, on “Human Being,” and production work from Metronomy’s Joseph Mount, Robyn’s frequent collaborator Klas Åhlund, and Kindness.
