At long last, the retro-soul superduo Silk Sonic have released their debut album, An Evening With Silk Sonic. The group features Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, who met on tour in Europe in 2016. The pair quickly hit the studio and recorded some music but didn’t return to their collaboration until February 2020, right before the world went into lockdown.
“I’m not sure we would have done it if it wasn’t for the pandemic,” .Paak said of the album in an interview with Rolling Stone. “It was tragic for so many people, but Bruno would have probably been on the road, me too—but we had to be here.”
Mars and .Paak bonded over their love of ’60s and ’70s soul and R&B and created a throwback album that’s meant to be escapist fun. The LP even features narration from legendary funk bassist Bootsy Collins. Silk Sonic debuted back in March with “Leave the Door Open,” which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Skate” and “Smokin Out the Window” followed.
