St. Louis-born rapper Smino returns today with his third studio album, Luv 4 Rent, the follow-up to 2018’s NOIR and his first LP since inking a deal with Motown Records in 2021. Leading up to the release of the project, the MC born Christopher Bjorn Smith Jr. shared two singles: “Matinee” and the J.Cole-assisted “90 Proof.” The latter track soared into the upper reaches of the Genius Top Songs chart upon release.

Smino considers Luv 4 Rent to be a concept album about all the different types of love in his life—good and otherwise. “It could be bad love, petty love, obsessive love, real good love, family love,” Smino explained in an interview on the YouTube show Bear Witness, Take Action. “But it’s just about the different ways I lent out my heart to the point where I didn’t have enough left for myself. I just put a pause on a bunch of shit. Letting everybody come eat and then you go get the plate last and you like, ‘Damn, I’m hungrier than a bitch.’”

Along with J. Cole, Luv 4 Rent includes guest appearances from Doechii, Lucky Daye, Lil Uzi Vert, and Ravyn Lenae, among others.
