Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s Oscars Duet Of “Shallow” Caused A 219 Percent Surge In Genius Pageviews

The award-winning track returned to No. 1 on the Top Songs chart.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper picked up a win for Best Original Song at the 2019 Academy Awards for “Shallow,” the Top 5 hit from A Star is Born. The duo also wowed the audience with a performance of the track, featuring Gaga belting out the majority of her vocals from behind the piano before Cooper sat down to sing the final notes nearly cheek-to-cheek.

Thanks to the buzz surrounding the win and performance, the already-popular “Shallow” returned to No. 1 on the Genius Top Songs chart and experienced a 219 percent increase in pageviews. During the two days prior to the Academy Awards, the song totaled 19,350 pageviews. On the day of the ceremony and the Monday after, it saw a combined 61,795 pageviews.

“Shallow” is co-written by Gaga alongside Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Anthony Rossomando. Production is handled by Benjamin Rice and Gaga herself.

After opening with back-and-forth verses by Cooper and Gaga, the song moves into the chorus for which it’s best known:

I’m off the deep end, watch as I dive in
I’ll never meet the ground
Crash through the surface where they can’t hurt us
We’re far from the shallow now

In Gaga’s acceptance speech, she offered up words of encouragement for anyone striving for a dream. “I’ve worked hard for a long time and it’s not about winning, but what it’s about is not giving up,” she said. “If you have a dream fight for it… and it’s not about how many times you get rejected… it’s about how many times you stand up and are brave and you keep on going.”

“Shallow” peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s fast approaching 400 million Spotify streams and has racked up 4.7 million Genius pageviews since being released in late September.
