Yesterday, Why Don’t We dropped “How Do You Love Somebody,” the third single off the boy band’s forthcoming third studio album, following “Let Me Down Easy (Lie)” and “Just Friends.” Why Don’t We first teased “How Do You Love Somebody” on TikTok back in April, and since its official arrival, the song has sat comfortably in the Top 5 on the Genius Top Songs chart.
Produced by Grey, “How Do You Love Somebody” is a guitar-driven power-pop song about an ex moving on to someone else a little too fast. All five members of the band—Jonah Marais, Corbyn Besson, Daniel Seavey, Jack Avery, and Zach Herron—were able to draw on personal inspiration for the lyrics.
“Every song we make, we feel one step closer to defining the question ‘who is Why Don’t We?’ and I don’t think the band has ever been so unanimous that a song defines who we are as ‘How Do You Love Somebody’ does,” the boys explained in a statement. “It’s an anthem for all who have had a past lover that moved on too quickly, which all 5 of us can, unfortunately, relate to.”
The track opens with the first verse, sung by Jonah. He describes a summer romance that didn’t turn out the way he’d planned. Unfortunately, the unexpected turn of events hasn’t affected his ex as much as it’s affected him.
