She addresses the games people play in relationships.

Tove Lo’s catchy single “Cool Girl” was inspired by another great work of art: the 2014 thriller Gone Girl. The Swedish singer was particularly moved by a standout scene featuring actress Rosamund Pike.

“I just remember this monologue that she has in the movie where she says that she’s changed a lot things about herself to become someone that she thought her husband would want,” the 28-year-old artist tells Genius. She based the song’s overall concept—including the repeated “cool girl” hook—around that scene. “The overall theme is I’m questioning all the power games that we play in relationships, especially early on when it’s like, ‘Why is it that it’s so hard to just be honest about how I feel?’”
