The Full ‘Us’ Remix Of Luniz’s “I Got 5 On It” Is Here

Jordan Peel’s film drops on March 21.

The trailer for Jordan Peele’s upcoming horror film, Us, arrived complete with a creepy remix of Luniz’s 1995 hit “I Got 5 On It.” Now, the full “tethered remix” is available to stream. It’s handled by Michael Marshall, the vocalist who sings the original song’s hook, and represents the first taste of the film’s upcoming soundtrack.

Bay Area duo Luniz dropped “I Got 5 On It” in 1995, and it went on to become the group’s biggest hit. It peaked at No. 8 on the Hot 100 chart that year, and earned a remix with stars like E-40, Too $hort, and Richie Rich. The song’s instrumental has been sampled on songs like Yo Gotti’s “I Know,” Meek Mill’s “Heaven or Hell,” and SOB X RBE’s “Endzone.”

Marshall’s involvement in the remix is sure to feel like justice to some fans, considering the singer claims he didn’t receive royalty payments for the track for a decade.

In a December 2018 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Peele explained why he chose Luniz’s song for the film.

“That song, it came pretty simple, I’m making a movie in Northern California, that’s a bay area hip-hop classic and I wanted to explore this very relatable journey of being a parent [and] maybe some of the songs you listened to back in the day aren’t appropriate for your kids,“ he said. "So that was one level, and another part was, I love songs that have a great feeling but also have a haunting element to them and I feel like the beat in that song has this inherent cryptic energy, almost reminiscent of the Nightmare on Elm Street soundtrack. So those were the ideas that that song hit the bullseye on for me, and also, it’s just a dope track.”

The filmmaker’s last horror flick, Get Out, prominently featured Childish Gambino “Redbone,” helping the song become a long-lasting hit on the Hot 100 chart.

Us hits theaters in the United States on Thursday, March 21. Early reviews from its SXSW debut have been overwhelmingly positive.
