The U.K. Government Responds To Stormzy’s Grenfell Fire Call-Out During His BRIT Awards Performance

Teresa May hasn’t seen the performance directly.

South London MC Stormzy won big at the 2018 BRIT Awards on Wednesday, taking home awards for British Album of the Year and British Male Solo Artist, but that’s not the only reason he grabbed headlines. At the end of the show, Stormzy delivered a powerful performance of “Big For Your Boots” and “Blinded By Your Grace Pt. 2,” both of which appear on his much-lauded debut album Gang Signs & Prayer.

During the performance, he delivered a scathing indictment of U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, questioning her government’s response to the tragic Grenfell Tower fire in London last year, which sparked widespread conversation in the country about housing safety standards and budget cuts:

Yo, Theresa May, where’s the money for Grenfell?
What, you thought we just forgot about Grenfell?
You’re criminals, and you got the cheek to call us savages
You should do some jail time, you should pay some damages
You should burn your house down and see if you can manage this

Although May didn’t see the performance herself, a spokesperson offered a response to Stormzy’s call-out. “The PM has been clear that what happened at Grenfell was an unimaginable tragedy, which should never be allowed to happen again,” they said, according to a report from The Guardian. “She is determined the public inquiry will discover not just what went wrong but why the voices of the people of Grenfell had been ignored for so many years.”

Stormzy has long been vocal in his support of the Grenfell victims, and appeared on a charity single last year in support of the survivors alongside Liam Payne, James Blunt, Rita Ora, Jorja Smith, and more.
