He references her past as an equestrian.

The Weeknd’s newly released EP My Dear Melancholy, is seemingly full of references to his past relationships. Fans are speculating that two tracks are about his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, and it appears the Toronto singer is reminiscing about his former relationship with Bella Hadid on the Frank Dukes and Skrillex-produced “Wasted Times.”

During the opening lines of the song, The Weeknd seems to hold his relationship with Hadid in a more favorable light than the one he had with Gomez. Genius contributor NSRE breaks down The Weeknd’s dating history with both women:

Later on, he alludes to Hadid’s past as an equestrian:

You were equestrian, so ride it like a champion (I’ll beat it)
This sex will get you high without no other substance

Hadid grew up riding horses since the age of three. In a 2015 interview with PORTER Magazine, the model revealed she was training to compete in the equestrian events at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Unfortunately, Hadid’s battle with Lyme disease ended her shot at achieving her goal. The reference was quickly picked up and memed by fans on Twitter.

A few lines earlier in the verse, The Weeknd appears to keep the door open to being with Hadid again:

These girls only want you when you’re winnin' (winnin')
But you’ve been with me from the beginnin' (ooh, yeah, yeah)
And I know right now that we’re not talkin' (not talkin')
I hope you know this dick is still an option

The Weeknd could also be referring to Hadid on the EP’s final track “Privilege” as he wishes an ex-lover a final goodbye:

Enjoy your privileged life
‘Cause I’m not gonna hold you through the night
We said our last goodbyes
So, let’s just try to end it with a smile

Although the lines may be about Gomez, Hadid’s privileged upbringing allowed her to become an Olympic hopeful equestrian.

In November, E! News reported that The Weeknd and Hadid had reconnected but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Perhaps “Wasted Times” will be step toward bringing them back together.
