Trippie Redd’s latest song, “Topanga,” is the lead single from his next project, A Love Letter to You 3. In contrast to the upbeat, gospel-influenced production by ChopsquadDJ, the track features the Ohio rapper warning people not to test him.
Throughout the song, Trippie brags about his prowess with guns:
Got this choppa on me that I’m bustin'
If you run out on me then I’m gunnin'
Hit you in your stomach
We tote ‘em in public
In June 2018, Trippie was arrested and charged with battery and aggravated assault following a dispute during which he allegedly hit a woman in the head with a gun. Just two weeks earlier, he was arrested for fighting with Chicago rapper Lil Wop.
The track takes its name from the southern California area of Topanga, which Trippie also references in his lyrics:
I can take you to Topanga
Open my hand like Jesus and save ya
Know I’m known to tote bangers
Said, “Boom-boom-boom,” you in danger
In September, Trippie announced A Love Letter to You 3, the latest installment in his A Love Letter to You mixtape series. Trippie’s label told Genius that there is no official release date just yet, but fans are clearly eager to hear more from the project. In addition to racking up nearly 6 million Spotify streams in its first week, “Topanga” is popular on Genius, too, with over 83,000 pageviews during the same time period.
