twenty one pilots broke their year-long social media silence earlier this week with a cryptic tweet, and today the Columbus, Ohio duo revealed a pair of new songs, “Jumpsuit” and “Nico and the Niners.” The two tracks are taken from the band’s newly announced album Trench, out Oct. 5 on Fueled by Ramen.
“Jumpsuit” is accompanied by a music video which features lead singer Tyler Joseph being haunted by a mysterious hooded character riding on a white horse. On the song, he sings about struggling with the pressure of fame:
I crumble underneath the weight
Pressures of a new place roll my way
Fans theories speculate the character is a new alter ego named Clancy who was introduced through a series of journal entries on an esoteric “Dema” website linked to the band. twenty one pilots' breakthrough 2015 album Blurryface was named after Joseph’s alter ego of the same name.
Meanwhile, “Nico and the Niners” makes a direct reference to escaping from Dema:
East is up, I’m fearless when I hear this on the low
East is up I’m careless when I wear my rebel clothes
East is up, when Bishops come together they will know that
Dema don’t control us, dema don’t control
“Jumpsuit” and “Nico and the Niners” mark twenty one pilots' first new material since 2016’s “Heathens,” their contribution to Suicide Squad: The Album. Trench follows their fourth studio album Blurryface and coincides with the band’s upcoming fall tour.
