After facing public backlash over lyrics about Kobe Bryant on an unreleased song, Meek Mill drew further criticism late Monday night from Kobe’s widow, Vanessa Bryant. Sharing a screencap of the lyrics on her Instagram, Vanessa Bryant called the lyrics “extremely insensitive and disrespectful.” She also suggested he “find a better way to show your admiration for my husband.”
Meek later revealed on Twitter that he had spoken to Vanessa Bryant directly, apologizing for the lyrics:
The track in question was leaked online and never officially previewed or released by Meek or Lil Baby, and it’s unlikely to ever see the light of day.
Meek’s lyrics sparked widespread conversation online, with fans noting that Vanessa Bryant had asked the NBA not to hold tributes to her late husband on the one-year anniversary of his death and likely would disapprove of the “tribute.” Others said the bars simply didn’t connect, while some claimed that nothing is “off-limits” in hip-hop.
Meek previously referenced Kobe on songs like “Believe It” and “Jump Out the Face” during the late athlete’s lifetime, but it’s clear that his recent lyrics didn’t land as he intended.
