“Had to wear the dress ’cause I had a stick.”

In 2016, Young Thug drew controversy for the Alessandro Trincone dress he wore on the cover of his JEFFERY mixtape. The Atlanta rapper offers up an explanation for the wardrobe choice on “Just How It Is,” the opening track from his newly released album, So Much Fun.

Making good on a promise he made in an interview last month, Thugger references the dress on the chorus of the Wheezy-produced song. Genius contributor NYLLOCK breaks down the line in an annotation:

In a 2016 interview with The Fader, JEFFERY cover art photographer Garfield Larmond said Thug picked out the dress himself. “He saw the piece in New York, and said immediately, ‘I want that for the cover,’” Larmond recalled. “Like, there was no thought about it. He just saw it and knew he wanted it.”

Thug has long been known for pushing boundaries with his fashion. In 2015, he donned a Gucci dress for a Dazed cover story. A year later, he said “there’s no such thing as gender” in a video for Calvin Klein’s Fall 2016 campaign.
