SAVAGE MODE II is 21 Savage and Metro Boomin’s reunion as a superduo and the sequel to their July 2016 mixtape, Savage Mode. The record continues their extensive collaborative history, which dates back to 2015.
21 Savage first announced SAVAGE MODE II during a concert in Los Angeles, CA on July 19, 2019. While standing next to Metro, he concluded the show by saying:

On September 28, 2020, Savage and Metro posted a trailer for the album. They also revealed that the LP would be released at the end of the week. On the 29th, they unveiled the album’s artwork. The tracklist was revealed on October 1, less than five hours before the album’s release.

Yes, 21 Savage and Metro Boomin posted the album’s official trailer on September 28, 2020. Narrated by American actor Morgan Freeman, the teaser served as the official announcement of the album’s release, which came four days later.

On October 6, Metro Boomin revealed that the legendary spoken word artist Big Rube wrote the script for Morgan Freeman’s narration throughout the album.

What did Morgan Freeman say about the narration?
In an October 2020 article by GQ, Freeman said the following about accepting the role of narrator. Morgan said he jumped at the chance to narrate SAVAGE MODE II because it represents a stark departure from the “nice guy” roles he’s typically offered. He also said:
It’s Shawshank. Or it’s just, a lot of people call [my voice] the ‘voice of God.‘ What happens is you sort of get locked into a position. Henry Fonda was in it, Spencer Tracy was in it, James Stewart was in it, even though he played a couple of bad guys. You don’t really, don’t want to be cast into a mold, but after a few years, it’s bound to happen. Every [offer] that’s outside of what you consider [your] mold is fun to do. I got to jump at it.
I read the copy and was like wow, there’s some wisdom in here. I think this is the way I think. It’s basically saying, don’t suffer fools and when you want something, go for that. If [Savage’s music] is a young people thing, then this is stuff they need to be aware of. So it’s a good thing to do.
At press time, Freeman hadn’t listened to the music his narration accompanies, nor had he done further research on Savage.
