Tunnel of Love

This album, like much of Springsteen’s work, is a profoundly personal exploration of his own psyche. What sets it apart however is how much of a confessional it turned out to be. He had recently married actress and model Julianne Phillips, and many of the songs on this album directly and indirectly indict his own feelings of self doubt and ambivalence, particularly “Two Faces”, “Brilliant Disguise” and “Tunnel of Love”.

These are the words of a man unhappy in his two year old marriage, which would end two years later. He went on to marry Patti Scialfa, a singer in his band. These events came as no surprise whatsoever to anyone who listened to the lyrics on this album. A gut-wrenching confession from a brutally honest songwriter.
