The group’s first album since completing their Love Yourself trilogy in 2018, MAP OF THE SOUL: PERSONA marks the beginning of a new thematic chapter for BTS.
The theme of the album is centered around Carl Jung’s theory of personality archetypes being the fundamental of character. This album focuses on the persona archetype which is the mask an individual puts up to maintain an image. Evidently, the concept photos for the album depict the process of preparing one’s persona.
The album’s title was previously hinted at during an introductory video at the December 2018 MAMA.
Prior to its release, the album managed to surpass 3.02M pre-orders according to BTS’s distributor, Dreamus Company. Thus, projecting to be the biggest sales debut of all time for a Korean album.
This is the first time that a BTS album has surpassed 3 million pre-orders. The group’s previous record was 1.5M stock pre-orders for “Love Yourself: Answer.”
The album broke the all-time record for highest first-day sales and debut week sales on Korean platform, Hanteo. It is also the fastest selling album in Hanteo chart history, having sold 1.4 million copies, more than any album has sold in an entire week. The album also became the best selling album of all time in Hanteo Chart history by hitting 2.1M sales.
In the USA, the album debuted atop Billboard 200 Chart with a career-best sales week. BTS also became the first K-Pop act to hit #1 on UK Official Albums chart.
