About “Romance”

Romance is pop artist Camila Cabello’s sophomore studio album. The lead singles “Shameless” and “Liar” were revealed in several videos uploaded to her Instagram on September 3, 2019, alongside a post which revealed the album title with the message:

You are cordially invited to experience the first installment on September 5, 2019. Truly surrender to the drama. Courtesy of Camila Cabello.

The album’s third single, “Cry for Me” was released a month later, on October 4, 2019. This was followed in quick succession by “Easy”, which she debuted live on Saturday Night Live, alongside the earlier single.

One track on the album features a helping hand from Ed Sheeran, who has previously written a track for Camila. When speaking to Zane Lowe, Camila revealed that Finneas is also featured as a writer on the album, on a song called “Used To This.”

In November 2019, Camila performed two unreleased songs, along with “Shameless”, “Liar”, and “Easy” for an Apple Music Event. These two tracks were “Used To This” and “First Man”, which had leaked a year prior. During the session, she also revealed another track, titled “Dream Of You.”

On November 13, Camila unveiled the album art for Romance, and revealed its release date. She also announced that a fifth single, “Living Proof” would be released that Friday (November 15) in conjunction with the album’s preorder release.

“Romance” Q&A

  • Translations

  • What instructions are given prior to listening?

Camila insists to read the following before listening to the album:

Do you dare to lose yourself in love? Do you dare to lose yourself in the exquisite agony of it? The desperation, the madness, the urgency, the passion, the ectasy? An invitation like this is not for the faint of heart.. no, he who accepts the invitation to love must be bold. For those of us who are brave enough to love know deep down that we must therefore be brave enough to lose. We must walk to the one who makes our voice tremble and our lips quiver, we must extend our arms, and then we must show them the beating, bloody heart in our hands, and whisper ‘Here. Do what you want with this.’ Now, after that happens, there’s no telling what will happen next. Then all that’s left to do is surrender. I know what you’re thinking. ‘Surrender? That’s it? That’s all I can do now?’ Believe me, I know. How deliciously terrifying, how irresistibly maddening………….. Can you feel your heart in your throat? Have the butterflies in your stomach turned into roaring lions? If yes, then you know you’ve arrived. Welcome to the world of Romance.

  • What's the story behind the concept?

I thought of the album title Romance about a year ago. I wrote this super long thing called the “Romance Manifesto” where I was just talking about what I wanted this album to be, how I wanted it to make me feel, how I wanted it to make other people feel. And I think visually, I just loved the idea of like, when you’re in love, you’re almost on another plane of living… it’s like getting really close to heaven. The “Romance Museum” which is basically this big castle, is where all these stories are stored. These pieces of art, which are really stories of being in love. That’s why in the reveal, it’s like “Liar” and “Shameless” are these stories that have been immortalized in this museum.

  • Is this album about Shawn Mendes?

Somewhat. In an October 2019 interview with Lorraine, Camila revealed that Romance began when she was in her “first serious relationship.”

In June 2019, Camila broke up with her boyfriend, Matthew Hussey. It is unknown how long the pair had been dating, with E! News posting images of the two during a romantic getaway on February 9, 2019.

Not long after the break-up, Camila began dating Shawn Mendes, whom she had recently collaborated with. During a Q&A in October 2019, Shawn revealed that the two became official on July 4, 2019.

Continuing on with her interview for Lorraine, Camila confessed that some tracks from Romance were in fact written about Shawn:

Towards the end (of writing), there were. Yeah […] That’s the great thing about songwriting, you get to chronicle your life.

It likely that both “Liar” and “Shameless” that both songs were penned in a studio session a week prior to the filming of the music video for “Señorita.”

Another track that is likely about Shawn is “Used To This”, the final track written for Romance.

  • What has Camila said about the album?

When announcing its release date on Instagram, she captioned the post:

I can’t believe this is happening. Romance. December 6. I just wanted this album to sound like what falling in love feels like, pretty impossible thing to do but I can say I gave it all I had. I’ve never lived as much life as I did writing this album. It was messy, and beautiful, unforgettable and at times so painful I wish I could forget, it was excruciatingly consuming and impossible not to get lost in, it was mine… and now it’s yours. ♥️ I hope you love it as much as I’ve loved living it. You can preorder the album this Friday ♥️ and there’s a new song Living proof that comes out with the pre order this Friday 😭 one of the first and one of my favorite songs I wrote for the album. WHOAH. Overwhelmed. ♥️ OH MY GOD AND A TOUR!!!!! North America, verified fan sign ups for #TheRomanceTour are happening right now!! It’s gonna be magic, I can’t wait 😭 More dates to come ♥️ #RomanceIsComing
