The drowsiest and earliest inklings of the slowcore movement can be traced to Codeine’s debut, released in August 1990. Combining the Louisville scene’s relaxed tempo with doom metal’s distorted slurry, the album is a depressing masterpiece of hushed vocals, noisy guitar, and punishing drums. Frigid Stars LP is the NYC trio’s fuzziest and most affecting work.
Album’s title might be a reference to a line in the song “Crap Rap 2” by The Fall from their 1979 album Live at the Witch Trials.
“We are the Fall
Northern white crap that talks back
We are not black. Tall.
No boxes for us.
Do not fuck us.
We are frigid stars.
We were spitting, we were snapping "Cop Out, Cop Out!”
As if from heaven."
Song “Pea” is a bonus track first appeared in 1991 CD issue on Glitterhouse Records. Later same year the album was released on CD on Sub Pop Records with “3 Angels” bonus track, “Pea” is placed as a closer on that edition.
