Rattle That Lock

David Gilmour

About “Rattle That Lock”

Rattle That Lock, which was written over a five year period, is the fourth solo album by Pink Floyd guitarist/lyricist David Gilmour. It was released on the 18th of September, 2015.

The production was similar to that of the most recent, and final, Pink Floyd album, The Endless River, in the sense that the recording and production took place in a combination of the same two studios. The album features orchestral performances from the Liberty Choir, an organisation that helps inmates. His cooperation with the choir stemmed from his son’s experiences. Charlie Gilmour served a prison sentence after being a part of a protest. Coincidentally, David Gilmour’s son Gabriel performed his debut on the piano on the track “In Any Tongue”.

The album was released to commercial and critical acclaim. It peaked at No. 1 on the charts in various countries, including the United States and New Zealand. It went on to become gold certified in five countries, including the United Kingdom, and it even reached platinum status in Italy.

Rolling Stone writer David Fricke reminisced on his performance in Pink Floyd and said:

[…] the martial rock, ringed with light, of “Today” — is striking and effective, recalling the hooks-and-choruses side of 1971’s Meddle. But Gilmour is, inevitably, most eloquent here as a guitarist. In the iconic arcs of silvery treble illuminating the instrumental “Beauty,” the guitarist, 69, sounds like an expressive master of his craft, one who hasn’t aged a day.
