Winning the coveted Mercury Music Prize for best album in 2008, The Seldom Seen Kid is Elbow’s most commercially successful record, achieving triple platinum status in the UK and a peak of number 4 on their album charts. This is largely thanks to the massive single “One Day Like This,” which has become a hugely popular wedding song. Other singles released were “Grounds for Divorce” and “The Bones of You.”
The album was self-produced by the band, and the title comes from a nickname that lead singer Guy Garvey’s dad gave to a mutual friend and musician who passed away in 2006.
Garvey said of the record:
It had to be the five us. It had to feel like us against the world again. After enough time your band starts to feel like a gang. Because part of wanting to be in a band is wanting to be in a gang. “Weather to Fly” is about the early days of the band and for that reason it is my favorite song on the album.
