Angel Dust

Faith No More

About “Angel Dust”

Angel Dust is the fourth studio album by American rock band Faith No More. It is the follow-up to 1989’s highly successful The Real Thing, as well as the band’s final studio album with guitarist Jim Martin and the second to feature vocalist Mike Patton. It was the first album in which Patton had any substantial influence on the band’s music, having been hired after the other band members had written and recorded everything for The Real Thing except vocals and some lyrics.

“Angel Dust” Q&A

  • What have the artists said about this album?

In 2015, bassist Billy Gould told The Guardian:

We wanted to make the most [of The Real Thing’s success] by putting something interesting out there while we had people’s ears.

In 2012, Gould posted to a blog:

We just decided that no matter what, we would try to follow our instincts as much as possible, and do what feels right, with the hope that it would make a connection somewhere. In the beginning, it felt like the gamble didn’t work. But now… it’s extremely validating to feel like, in the end, we did make the connection and that our original instincts were correct.

In 1995, frontman Mike Patton told Kerrang:

I thought that it was a great record [but] it was dense and probably too clever for its own good. We made it more difficult for everybody, even ourselves!

Producer Matt Wallace claims guitarist Jim Martin was not as pleased with the project:

He kept referring to the music as ‘gay disco’. He just hated it. And I kept saying: ‘But we really need you – your guitar playing is what’s going to keep it from being gay disco. We need your big army boots in here’. He couldn’t get his head around it, and the band were furious.
