Skinty Fia

Fontaines D.C.

About “Skinty Fia”

The album’s title ‘Skinty Fia’ is an old Irish swear word that translates to “the damnation of the deer.” The expression was used by the drummer, Tom Coll’s great aunt. Grian Chatten described the word as sounding like “mutation and doom and inevitability and all these things that I felt were congruous to my idea of Irishness abroad.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Chatten said their inspiration for the album was “largely informed and influenced by Irishness existing in England and mutating and becoming a new kind of culture in general.”

The bassist Conor Deegan III said of the album in an interview with NME: “The third album is really good,” he said, adding: “We thought we’d got this sound that was finally the sound that we wanted to get across the songs, which we thought was quite poppy.” However, upon showing the demos to the band’s manager, he said: “Lads, this is the darkest shit you’ve ever written!”

In an interview with Mojo, Deegan says of Skinty Fia being the final part of an album trilogy:
“I always dreamed as a teenager of making three great albums, like Nirvana had. That was my ambition – so now that we’ve done that, I don’t really mind what we do.”

“Skinty Fia” Q&A

  • What have the artists said about the album?

    Grian Chatten:

That’s the lens through which all of the subjects that we explore are seen through anyway. There are definitely themes of jealousy, corruption, and stuff like that, but it’s all seen through the eyes of someone who’s at odds with their own identity, culturally speaking.

We wrote a lot of it at night as well. We went into the rehearsal space just as something different to do. When pubs and all that kind of thing were closed, it was a way of us feeling like the world was sort of open.
