This Time Next Year

This Time Next Year is the long-awaited sophomore studio album released by American singer-songwriter Gabbie Hanna, released independently on December 23, 2022. It was initially scheduled to release in late 2018, but numerous changes and proposals were made to the concept and release date.

After her debut single, “Out Loud,” Gabbie was given an exclusive Billboard interview that hinted at a release of an album that was in the works. Towards the end of 2018, Gabbie offered her audience the opportunity to decide how they would like to plan her future releases from that point on. It was a choice between “an album release” or “a collection of single releases,” to which a majority of fans decided to go with the album release.

Before the album’s announcement, Gabbie had released four leading singles, which were “Honestly,” “Honestly (Encore),” “Monster,” and “Monster (Reborn)”, which were set into the album.

However, in December 2018, Gabbie faced massive criticism because of a failed Genius Interview that became known as the “Monster Meme.” The negative criticism was effected enough for Gabbie to remove “Monster” and “Monster (Reborn)” from the album.

Earlier in 2019, Gabbie released another single for This Time Next Year titled, “Medicate”, which received high praise after the last release of “Monster”. Unexpectedly, Gabbie would go on to announce an extended play titled, 2WAYMIRROR. This would lead to Gabbie postponing the release of the album a second time, due to it not being finished and ready for release. To make the EP have cohesive storytelling, Gabbie ultimately decided to remove “Medicate” and “Pillowcase” from the album.

Although Gabbie was expecting to release the album in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was reluctant to postpone the album yet again. After the tough decision to put the album on hold, Gabbie went into detail about how she didn’t want the album release to be short-lived and underwhelming, but it was an opportunity to release another extended play, BAD KARMA.

In late 2020, Gabbie refocused and was ready to release This Time Next Year in 2021, processing to release the first two leading singles, “Call Me Crazy” and “Shut Me Up”. In February of 2021, Gabbie realized that she didn’t like the general genre of the album she was heading towards. Due to this, Gabbie put the album on hold gaining the help of American rock producer Landon Tewers to recreate the previous scrapped pop songs into rock/alternative pieces that would fit the album’s new general style.

At the beginning of 2022, Gabbie announced the release of her debut album Trauma Queen, considering it to be her long-awaited debut album. Several months passed, and listeners begin to question whether or not she was gonna release This Time Next Year, due to the high demand for the album,

As a surprise release on November 29, 2022, Gabbie released the only lead single off the album, “Haircut”. Four days later, Gabbie announced that she will be releasing the album at the end of the year, along with showing the official cover art and tracklist.
