About “Pieces of You”

Pieces of You is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Jewel, released on February 28, 1995, via Atlantic Records. It wasn’t until 1996 where the album’s lead single, “Who Will Save Your Soul” was released on June 4, 1996. The song was a commercial success, peaking at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. “You Were Meant for Me” was released as the second single on November 12, 1996, and reached a peak of #2 on the Hot 100, making it her first biggest charting single and her highest peaking single to date. The third single “Foolish Games” peaked at #2 as well.

The success of the first two singles from the album propelled the album to mainstream success in the US. The album peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 on March 1st, 1997, about two years after it’s release in 1995. It would stay on the chart for a total of 114 weeks.

“Pieces of You” Q&A

  • How did Jewel feel about the overall success of the album?

I certainly didn’t think that record would be massive as it was. The more I toured, I knew I connected with people when I sang, even though I was laughed at every radio station and called every name in the book by the media. Every time I sang—even if it was for Goth fans—I could see it was a conversion. So I just stuck with it and was very dogged. I did five and six shows a day, singing at high schools in the morning. And then did two to four radio station and record store appearances. Then I opened for Bauhaus at night and then I did a midnight coffee shop show on my own, and I did it all in a rental car. And that was grassroots. It was very, very intense. But it was what I signed up because I knew I didn’t make a record that was easy. And slowly the tide shifted. We almost gave up on the record after a year. That’s when [Bob] Dylan took me out [on tour]. He really mentored me and took me under his wing and talked a lot about my lyrics. He liked my lyrics, he’d go: “Why did you write that?” Having Dylan believe in me—that was a real turning point for me. It gave me the courage to keep going. And then after that, Neil [Young] took me on the road.
