Spirit is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Jewel, released on November 17, 1998 via Atlantic Records. Commercially, the album peaked #3 on the Billboard 200, and sold a total of 380,000 copies within its first week of release. As of 2010, the album has sold a total of 3,711,000 copies in the United States.
A total of five singles were released from the album: “Hands,” “Down So Long,” “Jupiter,” “What’s Simple Is True,” and “Life Uncommon.”

How did Jewel respond to the success of the album?
I talked more than I wrote, and that’s bad for me as a person — I become unhappy and listless as a person when I’m not writing. I promoted more than I created. I toured more than I was able to think.

I sort of wrote the record over the last four years of how on earth do you stay centered and somehow spiritual in the world without losing your grounding. So it’s like how do you find courage if you don’t have courage. How do have faith when you don’t feel like you wanna have any?
