Nectar is Joji’s second studio album, following his debut record BALLADS 1, released in October 2018.
After initially announcing a July 2020 release date, Joji postponed the album to September 25, 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests.
The first single from the record, “Sanctuary,” was released on June 14, 2019. The record’s second single, “Run,” released on February 7, 2020. The third single, “Gimme Love,” was released on April 16, 2020, along with the announcement of the title of the album and that it was originally intended to be released on July 10, 2020. The fourth single, a collaboration with Diplo called “Daylight,” was released on August 6, 2020.
The album takes a sonically different approach from BALLADS 1, with a sound that’s less focused on Joji’s typical melancholy, lo-fi sound. Instead, the album takes a mix of many retroelements and lo-fi instrumentation from old Joji projects.
In a September 2020 interview with magazine GQ, Joji said:
Originally it was based on finding dead ants in my freezer and joking about calling the album Nectar after that, but I was trying to put a lighter spin on it. At the end of the day, every life form is chasing something.
[I’m making] sure everybody around me is taken care of… I made sure to include many essences from my earlier work while still being able to move forward both artistically and emotionally.

It definitely revealed a bit of unknown potential, developing this era makes me a better leader and makes the important things in life very clear…
I’m just excited to be creating opportunities. I’m not chasing anything amazing or legacy-related, I’m moving forward and creating the things I want and need to hear and see and use and taste within my field of talent respectfully.
