SUBJECT TO CHANGE

Kelsea Ballerini

About “SUBJECT TO CHANGE”

SUBJECT TO CHANGE is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Kelsea Ballerini released on September 23, 2022. It was announced by Ballerini in July 2022.

Ballerini had mentioned in an earlier Tiktok Q&A session that the album was inspired by 90s music in general and 90s female country music in particular, and that the album would represent her growth as an artist and ability to adapt to change.

Ballerini included several female collaborators, including Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild, a co-writer on “Subject to Change” and the project’s first single, “Heartfirst.” Alysa Vanderheym is a co-producer on the project, and wrote “Heartfirst” with Fairchild and Ballerini. In an interview with Billboard, Ballerini said

I intentionally wanted to write with more women this time. For me, when you are making a record about emotions, when you connect with a woman creatively, you’re gonna be able to tap into that in a whole different way.

She also described The Corrs, Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, Sixpence None the Richer and Sheryl Crow as key influences for the album.

The lead single “HEARTFIRST” was released on April 8, 2022. LOVE IS A COWBOY" was released as the first promotional single on July 15, 2022. “THE LITTLE THINGS” and “WHAT I HAVE” were also issued ahead of the album release.

“SUBJECT TO CHANGE” Q&A

  • What has Kelsea said about the album?

The theme was change and evolution and growing up, and a lot of contrast within that and juxtaposition within that. And I loved the idea that we’ve all been really challenged by change the last several years, and by change that’s really out of our control, that’s kept us at home and all of that stuff. And so, I loved the idea of that being such a relatable, universal topic.
