What It Means To Be King is the first posthumous album by rapper King Von following his debut studio album, Welcome to O'Block. The album was confirmed by his official DJ, Chopsquad DJ.

On December 23, 2021, the album’s release date was hinted at on Von’s manager 100K Track’s Twitter announcing the completion of the album via an tweet captioning:

The Face 🥴 you make when every comment under your picture say “drop @KingVonFrmdaWic album” 🙃 but you know it just finish cooking, the team and @empire just finalize the date 👀🤞🏾 little hint it’s not this month but it’s not march either 🙏🏾 @_djbandz help me out here 😂 i’m getting jumped 🥺 Long Live The King 🕊❤️⭕️🅱️

On January 14, 2022, Lil Durk’s official DJ, DJ Bandz tweeted the albums name and that it would be released in February 2022. Shortly after tweeting this, he quickly deleted it, however, Your Rap News managed to screenshot it and reposted it. The tweet stated:

On February 4, 2022, the lead single “Don’t Play That” with 21 Savage was released. By promoting the song on YNW Melly’s Instagram, it was announced that the album would be released on March 4, 2022.

On February 28, 2022, the official album cover was announced alongside a pre-save link via Twitter. It was shown on Apple Music that the album would feature a total of nineteen songs with “Don’t Play That” as the fourth track.

The album’s final single, “War” was released just two days prior to the album on March 2, 2022. The track took on more of King Von’s natural drill-influenced style.
