About “Sometimes I Might Be Introvert”

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert – which is also an acronym for SIMBI, Simz’s nickname – is UK rapper Little Simz’s Mercury Prize-winning fourth studio album, released on September 3, 2021.

Little Simz first teased new music on April 8, 2021, writing:

sorry I been quiet , I’ve been working. new music coming 💣⏳

On April 19, 2021, she announced that the album’s lead single and quasi-titular track “Introvert” would be releasing two days later, on April 21. That same day, she revealed the album title and release date.

The second single, “Woman,” was released on May 6, 2021. It was followed by the third single “Rolling Stone” on June 14, 2021, and the fourth single “I Love You, I Hate You” on July 8.

A few hours before the album’s release, Simbi released the fifth and final single “Point and Kill.” Once the record was out, she wrote:

Sometimes I might be introvert. An album from me to you. My best work to date. I’m so proud of this album. I remember being asked after GREY Area “whats next whats next?! I had no idea but I knew it was going to be sick. To everyone that played a part in this project, thank you.

“Sometimes I Might Be Introvert” Q&A

  • What is the story of the album's name?

    Little Simz:

People think I’m rude, or antisocial, or awkward, because I’m not chatty. I know that I’m quiet, innit? I’m just very to myself and I didn’t know how to really navigate that, especially coming in this industry where you’re expected to have this extroverted persona all the time.

I wanted to just let people know like, yo, I’m actually this way inclined […] When it comes to business and my work, I’m not shy at all, I don’t hold back with that. I’m very serious and direct, but other stuff sometimes…

  • What have the artists said about the album?

    Little Simz:

It’s me being this introverted person that has all these crazy thoughts and ideas and theories in my head and not always feeling like I’m able to express it if it’s not through my art.

  • What else have the artists said about the album?

    Little Simz:

Sometimes I’ll be in my own space, my own company, and that’s when I’m really content. It’s all love, though. There’s nothing against anyone else; that’s just how I am. I like doing my own thing and making my art.

It was straight boot camp. We got things done pronto, especially with the pace that me and Flo move at. We’re quite impulsive: When we’re ready to go, it’s time to go.

[Requesting Emma Corrin’s participation] was a reach. I’m not sure what I expected, but I enjoyed watching her performance, and wrote most of her words whilst I was watching her.

  • What has the artist said about the album?

    Little Simz:

It was always going to be quite cinematic and of scale,” she explains. “I wanted to make a visual and colourful album that was almost a soundtrack to my life. The orchestration really helps bring that to light, especially the way we use strings and have it float throughout the project and within these interludes, making it feel concise. I think that was a genius decision, to be honest.

It just happens. We were making these little demos, it was calling for certain things like live orchestration, backing vocals and all these kinds of things and we just followed it. Everyone bought the right intention to the music, which is why it sounds the way it does. Everyone’s intention was pure and just wanted to give the best of the project. This album is definitely a step up from both those projects. I’ve not shied away, but I’ve just tried to elevate.

  • What has Little Simz said about working with producer Inflo again?

That’s my G, bro. Our chemistry is just unmatched. We really understand each other in the studio. It’s a trust thing as well: when you go into making an album with someone, there has to be a high level of trust because it’s not going to be an easy ride. He trusts my ear and I trust his; we push each other. We’re also both fearless where there is no boundary or no limit of what we can try in the studio. There’s just the freedom to create and if it works, sick, but I think having the space to try new things is what I love most about working with ‘Flo.

  • How was the album received by critics?

Based on 18 reviews from mainstream sources, it was universally acclaimed and received an average Metacritic rating of 87. Writing for NME, Dhruva Balram said:

The production throughout is nothing short of exceptional. With the full backing of an orchestra, there is a richness to the sound overseen by seminal producer Inflo. Their chemistry is apparent throughout as the vocals and production coil around one another egging the other on to new heights. … It’s not hyperbole to suggest that this canonises her work forever, elating her to be one of the greats.

  • Has the album received any accolades?

Yes: in 2022, Little Simz won both the Mercury Prize and the Libera Award for Sometimes I Might Be Introvert.
