FATHER OF 4 is Offset’s debut solo studio album. Its title is referencing his fatherhood of four children, Jordan, Kody, Kalea, and Kulture. The album boasts features from J. Cole, 21 Savage, Cardi B, Gunna, Quavo, Travis Scott, Gucci Mane, and more.
On October 31, 2018, Offset mysteriously tweeted his birthday, which fans assumed was a tease of his solo project’s release date. Quavo continued to tease the album on November 4, 2018, when he posted his and Takeoff’s albums to Instagram, captioning the post:
2 D O W N 1 M O T O G O
Then, on November 6, 2018, Offset tweeted his birthdate again, except it was the date in 2018, confirming the album’s original release date.
Billboard published an interview with Offset on November 20, 2018. In the interview, the album was still untitled, and Offset stated that it would be featureless, which turned out to be false.
On November 30, 2018, one of the album’s tracks, “Red Room,” was unintentionally put on streaming services. Although it was quickly removed, the song was still spread around the internet. It was officially released alongside its music video on February 14, 2019.
On February 10, 2019, Offset officially declared the album’s release date and announced that it would be accompanied by a documentary.
On the day before its release, Offset revealed the album’s title, tracklist, and artwork.
Offset has four children born of four different women.
In his interview with Billboard, Offset said the following about the album:
I’m talking about relevant situations that have occurred over the last 18 or 24 months, like me being in the crash, my kids, my family time, and me being married. There’s different parts of my life. The ups and downs of being in music, the feeling of people doubting me and being the underdog to becoming the big dog. I’m not really talking too much about Pateks and Lambos because it’s not relatable. That’s almost like bubblegum rap now, how the people are accepting it. They just get two days of playing it, then it’s over with. This can last and people can feel it. I’m really pushing my album to be a playlist and not an album, because a playlist is consistently being played for moves, exercises, and different things. With Spotify and all the streaming services, it’s all about who got the biggest playlist. So I was focused on making my album like a playlist. The format of what an album is in the books, isn’t what’s going on in 2019. When I say I want a playlist vibe, I’m still giving you content with the songs – real shit that’s going on. It’s an album of what I’ve been going through here and there and what got me to this point.
Yes, this album is preceded by solo releases from each of Offset’s fellow Migos members. Quavo’s eponymous album was released on October 12, 2018, and Takeoff’s The Last Rocket was released on November 2, 2018.
The album’s accompanying documentary details the events that occurred in Offset’s life leading up to the album’s release. Topics include his marriage to Cardi B in September 2017, his nearly fatal car crash in May 2018, his daughter’s birth in July, his highly publicized split from his wife in December, the album’s overall creative process, and more. These topics are a reflection of what Offset discusses throughout the album.
Father of 4 debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200, moving 89,000 equivalent album units.
