About “Holding onto Strings Better Left to Fray”

“Holding onto Strings Better Left to Fray” is Seether’s 5th studio album. Unlike past albums “Disclaimer”, “Karma and Effect” or “Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces”, “Holding onto Strings Better Left to Fray” presents us a less edgy, less gritty side of the South African Alternative Metal band (although its presence is still felt on the opening track “Fur Cue” or in “Desire for Need”) but features a more mature and more emotional side (especially when it comes to lyrics).

In spite of being less heavy (when compared, for instance, to “Karma and Effect”, which is considered by many to be the heaviest effort of their career so far) “Holding onto Strings Better Left to Fray” is emotionally beautiful, and still pretty energic. The beautiful melodies of tracks like “Master of Disaster” and “Pass Slowly” contrast in perfection with the energy of tracks like “Tonight” or “Fade Out”, while being put together by the aforementioned heaviness presented in “Desire for Need”. This combination by itself doesn’t take away the fact that this album is not as heavy as its predecessors, but still gives us the feeling that this is one of Seether’s most solid works of art.
