A Few Small Repairs is the fourth studio album from folk-rock artist Shawn Colvin, released on October 1, 1996 via Columbia Records. The album did well commercially, reaching a peak of #39 on the US Billboard 200 chart. A year after the album was released, it was nominated for “Best Pop Album” at the 39th Annual Grammy Awards.

The album spawned a total of four singles: “Get Out of This House”, “Sunny Came Home”, “You and the Mona Lisa”, and “Nothin' on Me”.

“Sunny Came Home” became Colvin’s most successful single from the album and her career, reaching a peak of #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as becoming her only single to appear on the Hot 100. At the 40th Annual Grammy Awards in 1998, the song was nominated for “Song of the Year” and “Record of the Year” for “Sunny Came Home”, winning both awards.

“A Few Small Repairs” Q&A

  • Where does the inspiration behind the album cover come from?

The inspiration behind that story came from the painting that I chose to be on the cover of the record. I just liked Julie Speed’s work and I really wanted something different rather than a photo. In the 11th hour, “Sunny Came Home” was really barely there—in fact I think I had it as ‘Jimmy Came Home’ at one point before I’d written the lyric to “The Facts about Jimmy.” I looked at this cover and I thought, you need to write a story about this woman on the cover who’s got a lit match and a big fire in the background."
