Sinéad O'Connor’s debut album The Lion and the Cobra delivered a powerful punch upon its 1987 release. In it Sinéad introduced herself as a talented one-of-a-kind artist, through a unique combination of “the uncompromising force of folk music, the sonic adventurousness of the Eighties and lyrics that draw on classical history, ghost tales and the Bible” Rolling Stone. Many of the songs on the album, including Jackie, were written when O'Connor was only fifteen years old, several years before the album’s release in 1987, when she was twenty-one years of age.
Commercially, the album peaked at #38 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it her first appearance on the chart.
Its title taken from the bible, Psalm 19:13: “You will tread upon the lion and the cobra, you will trample the great lion and the serpent,”
