Swift released this EP of six songs from her July 2020 album folklore just under a month after the album’s original release. “the lakes” was originally only available on the deluxe edition of folklore.
Swift explained via Twitter minutes after its release:
In my head, the songs on folklore fit together in different groups and ‘chapters’ – based on how they fit together thematically. I want to share the first one today. Here’s ‘folklore: the escapism chapter’ ❤️
If someone is turning to escapism, they’re trying to avoid something unpleasant by means like daydreaming.
On “the lakes,” Swift discusses running away to England’s Lake District with a lover.
Swift recalls a childhood friendship on “seven,” even vowing to help her friend leave a seemingly abusive household.
“epiphany” touches upon the harsh realities of both soldiers and nurses during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, and how dreams serve as an escape from their traumatic experiences.
On “cardigan,” the speaker reminisces on good memories with an ex. There’s also a childlike element, alluding to “hide-and-seek” and Peter Pan.
On “mirrorball,” Swift admits to changing how she presents herself to please those around her.
Swift and featured artist Bon Iver both describe wanting to avoid an awkward run-in with an ex on “exile.”
