This is the fourth chapter that Taylor Swift has taken from her eighth album folklore, after three others: “folklore: the escapism chapter” and “folklore: the sleepless nights chapter” and folklore: the saltbox house chapter that she put online on streaming services as a compilation.

This chapter gathers the live version of “betty” (which is not present in the original album) and the song “cardigan”, which are the respective views of James and Betty on the story of the love triangle present in folklore.

The lyrics also describe the real-life story of Taylor’s ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal not showing up to his birthday party, which makes a similarity to Betty’s situation.

Taylor explained during a live chat on the night of the release of folklore:

There’s a collection of three songs that I call ‘The Teenage Love Triangle.’ These three songs explore a love triangle from the perspective of the three people at different times in their lives.
