Scaled And Icy (Livestream Version)

The Livestream Experience was the culmination of a six-week online event on live.twentyonepilots.com for the promotion of twenty one pilots‘ sixth studio album, Scaled And Icy, leading up to a one-night exclusive livestreamed concert, featuring the first live performances of songs from the album in addition to many of the band’s other hits. The Scaled And Icy (Livestream Version) album was released six months after to promote the then-newly announced The Icy Tour, with the band dubbing the album’s release as Scaled And Icy’s “half birthday,” and features all of Scaled And Icy’s songs and the Livestream Experience’s performances in addition to the non-album single “Level of Concern.” The decision to release the album like this was presumably to boost Scaled And Icy’s album sales statistics.

The concert was streamed live from Value City Arena in Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun’s hometown of Columbus, OH, after seven months of planning and rehearsing. The show itself was performed as an episode of the fictitious morning talk show Good Day Dema featuring Joseph and hosted by Dan Lisden and Sally Sacarver. While he performs with Dun over the course of the show, Joseph fights the bishops of DEMA, the physical embodiment of his depression, who were prevalent during twenty one pilots' Blurryface and Trench eras. The dialogue scenes portraying this story have been removed from the album and have not been officially released but snippets of were used during the band’s Takeover Tour.

The livestream was announced alongside the surprise release of “Shy Away,” the lead promotional single from Scaled And Icy, and was meant to give fans some kind of live show while concerts and tours were shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. Learning from other artists' virtual concerts, Joseph and Dun, along with hundreds of other people, spent seven months planning and two weeks marathon-rehearsing for this Broadway-inspired, twenty one pilots-infused music experience, which was highly praised by Billboard, Rock Sound, NME, Bring the Noise UK, Strife Magazine and fans all over the world.

The Livestream versions of “Shy Away” and “Heathens / Trees” were released as promotional singles along with newly edited performance videos from the Livestream Experience. A digital version of the album was added to the band’s online webstore on November 19, 2021, before its official announcement later in the day. It was removed temporarily, and re-added approximately an hour later, once the album was published to online streaming services, giving it a partial release day.
