Your City Gave Me Asthma is Twitch streamer-come-musician and Lovejoy frontman Wilbur Soot’s debut album. Its songs handle themes of loneliness, substance abuse, and a desperate need to escape London. In a Twitch stream on December 20, 2020, Wilbur stated that a girl he liked and then eventually dated for two years when he was seventeen years old is the subject of a lot of the songs on this album.
The title is a reference to Wilbur developing asthma since moving to London, which he touches on in the album’s first song, “Jubilee Line”. In Wilbur’s podcast, Hey and Stuff, Wilbur revealed that the album was originally going to be called Cocaine Makes You Boring, but changed the title to something that resonated more with the songs.

Your City Gave Me Asthma is a very simple [album]. […] I said a while ago how I didn’t want to “own” this album anymore. Like, I like owning it, like, I like it being mine. It’s my creative work, but, like, in terms of who owns it in the heart, it’s you guys. I don't– I don’t own the feelings in that album anymore, so whatever attributions you’ve put on the lyrics and whatever attribution you feel like the lyrics say to you, that’s correct. That’s your interpretation. Whatever your interpretation of this album is, is the correct one, because it’s been so long and a lot of it doesn’t apply anymore, apart from maybe “Saline Solution”. It’s still– I still listen to it and I’m like, “yeah, that’s still me”.
