Most Consistent/Inconsistent Bands/Artists of all time

Hey Rock Genius fam, I haven’t been on this sub-forum for a lengthy amount of time (well Genius as a whole until I came back recently), so I thought now would be a good time and get active again and maybe actually start contributing and discussing the genre that was my first love musically, so with all that out of the way let’s get to it.

In your opinion which band/artist is was or is the most consistent (as in constantly released or releases quality material over an extended period of time) of all time? Same goes for inconsistent.

My picks for consistency:
Arcade Fire
Portugal. The Man
Sonic Youth
The Ramones
Bad Religion
The Cramps

My picks for inconsistency:
Bob Dylan
Weezer
The Melvins
Pearl Jam
Green Day
U2
TV on the Radio

I can name more bands, but I’m extremely tired while making this lol. Leave your picks at the bottom or tell me your opinions on my choices!

Any band who have been around for more than about 10 years are going to be inconsistent, except Spoon.

Ultimately I think both titles go to Welsh bands (sorry Spoon).

Most consistent: Super Furry Animals
Least consistent: Manic Street Preachers

What the very fuck?

Picks for consistency: Arcade Fire

inconsistency: Bob Dylan

Just what? Sorry mate, Arcade Fire have four albums from 2004 until 2013. That’s 9 years. If we look at His Bobness from his first album in 1962, until 1970. One less year, and he has eleven albums. Look at the albums he has in that time:

First album is a decent collection of mostly covers.
- Bob Dylan

Next are two absolute classics of their style, and hugely influential.
-The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
-The Times They Are a-Changin'

An album that contains some quality songs, would probably be viewed better by most if not for the quality of the last two. There are great songs though, and some of the best lyrics you’ll see. Solid, and important.
- Another Side.

The electric trio. what do I need to say about these? First one is fantastic, some of the best songs ever. The second two are consistently rated in the top five of best album of all time lists
- Bringing It All Back Home
- Highway 61 Revisited
- Blonde on Blonde

Next album is a wonderful pastoral folk/country album, also important in that it was released at the height of the psychedelic era (Same year as Sgt. pepper for example was released the same year)
- John Wesley Harding

Next album is pure country, not one that I like but plenty of people do. Rated quite highly for what it is.
- Nashville Skyline

Self Portrait, well it was shit. One blip, and in the same year he released another album that while isn’t as good as previous stuff contains a number of good songs, and can be considered a minor return to form.
-New Morning

So what do we have here? In one year less Bob had made six more albums, made some of the best and most important albums of all time as well a number of solid albums. He set the trends that others would follow and influenced so many other artists to the point that his music is synonymous with that the era. Arcade Fire have made three modern greats (And only time will tell how they are considered) and one that is considered a bit iffy. Hmm….

Similarly The Beatles, who you have has most consistent broke up in 1970. Bob Dylan went on to make music for decades after that, made another album that tops best of all time lists in Blood on the Tracks and made a number of other great albums. Sure, there were plenty of shit ones too as time went on, but how is it even remotely reasonable to compare consistency over such drastically different time spans.

It was someone else who had The Beatles for consistency, but the point stands.

Consistent: PJ Harvey
Least consistent: Neutral Milk Hotel

Iron Maiden are fairly inconsistent. They had a great run of albums in the 80s but most of their 90s stuff was not great.

disagree with the melvins

Well… I guess punk bands are more consistent than most other genre bands… I mean, look at NOFX and Bad Religion, besides a few albums they both released good stuff only. I don’t like the first three No Use for a Name’s albums, but the rest of their discography is amazing, so I guess they were consistent. I still don’t dislike any Lagwagon album to date, including Hang. Blink 182 released different sounding albums, but all of them are awesome.

On the metal stuff I see more inconsistent bands like Sepultura, they have only two types of albums: really good or really bad. Angra is also a really inconsistent band, Angels Cry is good, but I didn’t like Holy Land or Fireworks, but loved Rebirth and Temple of Shadows… then hated Aurora Consurgens and liked Aqua.

But yeah… In the more alternative stuff, Weezer of course is inconsistent as hell, and My Chemical Romance released three awesome albums and a weak one before spliting up, but yeah… I guess they’re consistent.

oh dear, I love Sepultura…

January 10th, 2015

Like seriously…
I used to have 4 different setlists of theirs on my wall when I was a kid
I had Andreas Kisser’s guitar pick, and caught Igor’s drumstick

I even used to have 2 pairs of Sepultura shorts.

I’m not that much of a fan, but as a brazilian, Sepultura is important as hell for brazilian metal, so ode to them.

January 10th, 2015

huge fan
they got me into Ratos de Porão
I even used to be pen-pals with João Gordo

we all like different things
