Rock Genius Community Intros!

Hey everyone! I’ve seen a few Community Intro pages and threads within other communities, but not yet for Rock Genius. So here it is! Feel free to introduce yourself below and tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m Stella, and I’m a moderator here on Genius. I joined in June 2015, became an editor in January 2016, and earned my purple name in August 2016. My favorite rock bands include My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, New Years Day, Nirvana, and You Me At Six. When I’m not on the site, I’m usually listening to music, writing my own lyrics, or drawing.

Hi, I’m Max and I’m an alcoholic and I’m a second generation deadhead (s/o to dad) and a gizzhead. I’ve had my account for 2 or 3 years or something idk but I really got serious in the fall of last year and became an edi in November.

i’m only around intermittently these days but i like checking in on rock genius, bon iver, and the latter group of artists in that tate when i’m not busy pretending that i’m in Twin Peaks. i write about music and sports from time to time at a blog that myself, @BennySwans, and @nietzsche run called some millennials, and am currently two books into my goal of reading all of the 33 1/3 series

Hello, I’m KyddKarma aka @NeedsMorenerds aka Juwan , I’m an artist and editor. I explore, listen, and annotate in almost all genres, so I’m not exclusively rock but most of my favorite artists/Top 10 are rock, including such GOATs Prince and Queen. I’m also a fan of KISS, The 1975, Elton John, and Coldplay among others.

January 19th, 2017

I lurk and occasionally clean up the bus wreck of punk, hardcore and metalcore pages. My favorite bands are The Ghost Inside, Architects, Anti-Flag, and August Burns Red.

Hello I’m GroovyChick, I like alternative rock from GB and USA. Robert Smith is my hero.

Hello to all! Most people here either call me Apollo or Josh. I officially joined in early 2016 and was made editor that summer. I dabble in many genres to various extents, but rock and rap are my primary genres (though they each have countless subgenres).

I suppose Eminem, Blink 182, and Coheed & Cambria are my all-time favorites, as they’ve all made a huge impact on my life. I listen to quite a bit of music though, so I think I can usually find at least one mutual artist with just about anybody. Sticking with rock acts since this is in Rock Genius, some other randomly-selected favorites include Bayside, Modest Mouse, We Came As Romans, Circa Survive, Manchester Orchestra, Pierce the Veil, Fall Out Boy, Real Friends, Good Old War, Dance Gavin Dance, Walk Off the Earth, Ed Sheeran, New Found Glory, Alkaline Trio, Motion City Soundtrack, Emarosa, The Story So Far, Mumford & Sons, Major League, Sublime… The list just goes on. If anyone ever wants to trade recommendations or anything, I’m down :)

Hi, everyone. My name’s Osirus Shukmadeck and I’m Trendsetta’s current publicist. Mr. Trendsetta informed me that at present he’s busy “droppin' mad metadata science” on the Genius community, and therefore asked me to put together the following mini-bio for him:

Moniker: The last decade or so Trendsetta’s been keepin' things minimalist, but back in the day he was always the cat that had the flyest gear before anyone else, so his boys started callin' him Trendsetta. That shit stuck, and here we are.

Curriculum Vitae:

Trendsetta dropped in ‘71 (during a crossfire hurricane), got his first teardrop tat six seconds later (shouldn'ta spanked me, doc), and’s been steady peelin’ wigs and taggin' dimes ever since.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY:

Che’s House of Discontent ‘88-89

The Militia-Mart ‘89

One Stop Machete Shop ‘90

Sun Tzu’s RPG Emporium ‘91

Trendsetta “went Kerouac on that ass” from ‘91-11. Now he wiles away his days straight ventilatin’ suckas and bangin' hot chicks.

EDUCATION:

B.A. (Bachelor of Anarchy), Daugeetdahg University

M.B.A. (Master of Beatin' Asses), School of Hard Knocks

P.H.D. (Peeled Hella Domes), University of Logic & Reason (Egregia Cum Laude)

Doctorate of Humanism (Honorary) – Gore Vidal College for the Epigrammatic Arts

PLACES LIVED:

I’ve been everywhere, man, but Trendsetta currently divides his time between an impregnable South Pacific fortress (don’t try, you’ll lose) and The Grotto.

LIKES:

Fomenting revolutions, Exsanguinating Fascists, Sleeping

FAVORITE COLOR:

Chrome

Seriously though, glad to be a cog in the wheel of the world’s biggest collection of musical knowledge. Holla'.

I’m on the track to becoming an editor. I love rock, punk-rock, punk/emo, and other various forms of rock. An important note: I despise hip-hop/rap.

I’m a top scholar in Journey and Heart.

A few of my favorite artist are: The Beatles, David Bowie, VARSITY, Bon Iver, Journey, No Doubt, Heart, My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, Daniel “C418” Rosenfield, and Pink Floyd.

I inherited my love of rock from my parents (note that I have a crap-ton of old vinyls in my basement that are my mom’s) and I’m only partly emo.

Hi…great to meet all of you!

By day, I’m a cardiothoracic surgeon practicing in NYC. By night…uh, I guess I’m the same damn thing on call. When I’m not on call, I waste my evenings on this site. I have always prided myself on my broad range of musical interests, but I must say I have been pleasantly surprised to learn from all of you that I am not so unique in that regard.

Most surprising to me are those of you who list universally acclaimed bands next to what I might consider third tier or even crap bands – but I love it! Vive la difference! It’s fun trying to reconcile what those bands have in common for you, if anything.

I’m obsessed with (intelligent) lyrics, and I love regaling friends, family and co-workers with lists of songs they didn’t know were about masturbation, drugs and gay sex. Nothing beats watching them progress through the five stages of grief as I nonchalantly expose the hidden subtext.

@heavenonfire Absolutely! Diversity is what keeps things interesting and, in the case of this site, afloat :) I share your interest in that mysterious link in music (e.g., how someone who primarily listens to 80s Britrock and someone who primarily listens to modern rap can both appreciate Franz Ferdinand, or something).

Out of curiosity, who would you consider to be your favorite artists?

February 4th, 2017 | edited February 4th, 2017

@GoodApolloIV Well, just to name a few…Beatles, Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, Rolling Stones, Stooges, Bowie, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, The Jam, Clash, Replacements, Smiths, Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, The Verve, Radio Dept., Miles Davis, 60s-70s RnB/soul (especially Smokey, Stevie, Womack), NWA/Ice Cube, Geto Boys, and I suppose I should throw in Tchaikovsky, Puccini and Verdi for good measure.

February 5th, 2017

@heavenonfire Broad range of musical interests, indeed! And to sort of revisit what you said, how rare (and awesome) it must be for someone to be capable of appreciating Miles Davis, The Beach Boys, Geto Boys, and My Bloody Valentine—covering vastly different areas of the musical spectrum. Thanks for sharing :D

Hey all. I thought it was about time I introduced myself. I’m Brad, a graphic designer in San Antonio, Tx. I’m about 6 months into regularly visiting and have really grown an appreciation for what we’re doing.

My favorite artists are Tool (since I was 12, 1999), Radiohead, The Mars Volta, Pinback, Iron & Wine, the War on Drugs, Pink Floyd, Minus the Bear w/Erin Tate and more.

My favorite thing to work on is metadata. Discerning lyrics isn’t easy for me, but I’ll try my best at it. But metadata.. it’s something I’ve done since I was 5 years old. I kept my thousands of baseball cards recorded in an Excel spreadsheet. Then I moved on to downloading a hundred gigs of music and kept meticulous metadata in Windows files. Now that I don’t download music anymore, I’m continuing with Genius. What’s funny is I didn’t realize my history of it until I started here. Therapeutic indeed. I love music more than metadata, but it’s close.

Anyway, I don’t know what it takes to be an editor here or what it even means, but I would be interested to find out. Until then, have a good day guys.
