[Interview] How Lexie Liu reached ‘The Happy Star’
Last time in Pop Genius, we dissected Lexie Liu’s latest album The Happy Star in our exclusive press
Justin Bieber released his highly-anticipated album Changes today, February 14th, 2020. The album’s songs are quickly climbing the Genius charts, and features fellow R&B artists Kehlani and Summer Walker as well as a handful of hip-hop artists: Quavo, Clever, Post Malone, Lil Dicky, and Travis Scott.
The album appears to focus on the healing from his wife and religion after growing in the spotlight. He told Apple Music:
I definitely have grown up in front of the world. I was dealing with a lot of fear. What am I going to talk about again? [How] is it going to be received? I saw how people reacted when I went onstage [with Ariana]. It gave me a boost of confidence and reminded me, ‘Oh, this is what I do. This is what I’m good at. I don’t need to run away from it.’ I was running away. But when something’s hard, it’s almost like we need to run towards the pain and run towards the hurt rather than run away from it. That’s when I think you get healing.
What are your thoughts on the album? It seems to be getting mixed reviews by fans. What were your stand-out tracks? Did you wish to see another song make the cut? Anything make you pause your listening experience? Let us know!
@Pessoa thanks for creating this, this super well-made. this album is already way better than I thought it’d be, and I’m enjoying it a fair lot more than I would than I initially thought after hearing “Yummy.” Immediate highlights are the “All Around Me” and “Second Emotion,” but Quavo goes IN on “Intentions” too.
Personally, I was a bit disappointed. I really wanted to hear “La Bomba” and “Dont Go Far” / “Always.” I guess not including these songs kinda left a sour taste in my mind to begin with. After first listen, I think it’s good, but I expect better from Justin.
“Second Emotion” and “Available,” were probably my favorite. Really enjoyed Clever’s outro on “Forever,” too!
the disappointment is real. I guess my standards were too high. I found myself skipping through a lot. The only songs I enjoyed were Get Me ft. Kehlani and Confirmation.
I loved it!!
I bought it at my Local Walmart, and ever since then I can’t stop listening to it, it’s sooo good!!
Also the more I listen to it, the more I find myself really liking it. :))
it is just not good. vocals are the best part, but lyrics aren’t great and i swear ¾ of the album had the exact same production. i got bored very quickly.
@theillestmanalive05 gotta say Purpose is definitely still his best
