Ooh this is a great topic. I’ll recommend a song from the band Television who I lovingly refer to as the first “indie rock” band. Their landmark album Marquee Moon is filled with sparse, melodic, structured anti-pop and it still sounds like indie rock groups today are trying to reach its pinnacle, and it came out in 1977. I’m putting the title track here. Over ten minutes, it has excellent guitar work and so much environment is provided by so few instruments and so little production. The solo in the second half is so epic, it’s almost emotionally draining. It’s a great introduction to indie rock.
